We are the WLMS Yearbook class. This year we will be creating the WLMS Yearbook and maintaining this awesome website. We will interviewing teachers and students, taking pictures, and writing reports about what our school is doing.
Purchasing the Yearbook
This year you can purchase your yearbook for 35 dollars until December 19th. After that the price will go up a certain amount. All 8th graders can buy an ad for the back of the yearbook to feature them.
Interviewing Teachers
We interviewed our team leaders and here are somethings that we have learned.
Mrs.Owens our 7/4 Science Teacher- Q:How do you think the new schedule affects the team? A:I think the new schedule helps the students for time to improve their grades, and making up missed work and fun activities. Q: If you could change anything about the school system, what would it be and why? A:Since moving from traditional calendar to year round, I realize that year round schools are not giving the same priority as the traditional calendar schools. Q:Do you think not having field trips help us learn more or the field trips were a good way to educate other than teaching? A:I think field trips are enrichment for learning styles. Mrs.Williams our 6/4 Language Arts Teacher- Q:Who and what inspired you to teach and why? A:My 10th grade world history teacher inspired me to think about teaching. She was creative and made learning fun. Q:What brought you to teach at West Lake Middle on 6/4? How did you decide to work here? A:I came to WLMS from Fuquay-Varina Middle. I wanted to teach in a year-round setting. Plus, the school had a great reputation. Q:What are the best tips you can give to someone about school and/or teaching? A:Organization for any career, school and experience is key.
Ms.Panagi our 8/1 Language Arts Teacher- Q:Are there any extra responsibilities as a team leader, if so what are they? A:Not a lot, sometimes maybe extra paperwork, and teachers come to me first sometimes. I am also the spokesperson for teachers and students. Q:Do you like this year's schedule? Do You like this year's schedule or last year's schedule more? A:I liked last year's schedule more, and I am still adjusting to this year's schedule. I Don't dislike this year's schedule but it's not my favorite.
Mrs.King our 8/4 Language Arts teacher- Q:What challenges have you faced throughout your teaching career? A: Reaching out to unmotivated students, some students put a wall up that is hard to break through Q: Your funniest experience while teaching? A: When students misuse words or make funny grammatical errors. For instance, the assignment was to write an essay on role models and the students wrote the essay about road models Q: How long have you been working with the 8/4 team? A: This is my 9th year with the 8/4 team. I have started as a 6th grade teacher and eventually moved to 8th grade to teach more independent students. Q: Have you ever been switched to another grade or track? How did this make you feel? A: I have never been forced to switch, but I have been asked and that made me happy because I felt like I had a choice. Q:Lastly, what do you see in the future for the 8/4 team? A: I see these students prepared for high school and more importantly life.
Mrs.Earls our 6/1 Science Teacher- Q:Is the team doing anything different this year?Why or why not? A:There is a new math teacher and I am changing the way I teach, everyday is a new day. I want to grow as a teacher and a person. Q:Do the teachers interconnect subjects? Why or why not? A:Yes,definitely, we try to connect all subjects and support each other. We want all students to understand all subjects are connected. Q:Why did you choose 6th grade science? A:Because when I was in 6th grade, my science teacher inspired me, we go to do fun experiments, directions, we got flags with the names of organs and had to put them in the organs.
Mr.Somma our 8/3 Social Studies teacher- Q: What events will the team be participating in this year and why? A:The team will be doing the Angel Tree Project with the service club and we will be going on some field trips during the school year. Q: What does the team hope to accomplish with these events and why? A: We want the students to experience the places were going to themselves instead of reading about the places. It can help them learn better. Q:What events does the team hope to do next or future school years? A:We hope to keep doing the same events just about every year.
Ms.Mitchell our 7/2 Math teacher- Q:Does Smart Block affect the team? A:It definitely does in a good way because they can catch up on work and now we have book club. Q:What event do you look forward to the most? A:The zoo because the students love being outside and able to walk around and see animals. Q:What was your favorite event in the past and why? A:My favorite event was last year when we went to Wake Tech.
No School
We have no school Wednesday, November 11th due to Veteran's Day and Leah Williams birthday!
Basketball Tryouts
The WLMS basketball tryouts begin this coming Monday, November 9th.
